RSPCA Membership
Established in London in 1824, the RSPCA was recognised as the first organisation in the world to concentrate solely on animal welfare issues. The South Australian body of the RSPCA was formed in 1875 to protect innocent animals against cruelty and provide treatment and care for the thousands of sick, injured and abandoned animals.
The RSPCA is responsible for preventing animal cruelty by actively promoting the five freedoms for animals:
- Freedom from Hunger and Thirst
- Freedom from Pain, Injury or Disease
- Freedom to Express Normal Behaviour
- Freedom from Fear or Distress
Other objectives of the RSPCA are to:
- Enforce the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act
- Investigate all reports of alleged animal cruelty throughout the State
- Lobby Government for improvements to legislation
- Conduct routine inspections of piggeries, battery farms, saleyards, abattoirs, markets, pet shops and circuses
- Educate the public about the humane treatment of animals
- Provide a 24-hour rescue service for sick and injured stray animals
The RSPCA is a not for profit, non-government charity and our huge workload is made possible by the support and generosity of the public. Consider joining as an RSPCA member; a strong membership base is vital to help the RSPCA in its quest to improve animal welfare laws and attitudes towards animals.
As a member, you will receive regular copies of the RSPCA journal, keeping you informed about animal welfare issues. You will also be helping to fund significant animal welfare projects and assisting the RSPCA to catch those who mistreat helpless animals.
Please join as a member and demonstrate your commitment to the animals. By supporting the RSPCA, you will enable Staff, Inspectors and Volunteers to watch over ‘All Creatures Great and Small'.
